I brought home a playmate for my Power Major- a November 1960 Fordson Super Major with Ford 712 loader and 713 backhoe. The tractor has several modifications due to the installation: The orginal frame from front casting to clutch casting has been replaced by the loader/backhoe frame, the foot platforms have been cut out for the upper backhoe supports, the center axle cross piece has extra stops welded on to prevent tilt and maybe other things I haven't noticed yet. Were these units sold as one piece by US Ford dealers and if so, where was the installation/ modifications done? Were the tractors built differently in anticipation of backhoe/loaders? Thanks

Julian,
I am looking at a very similar machine to purchase. Could you or anyone give me an idea how much it might be worth, or what you paid for yours? I'm looking at a 1960 fordson super major diesel with a hoe and a loader on it. Not sure if it has the 712 and 713. Where might the #'s be? it starts well and tires are good, but seals leak. paint is fair, needs paint. it is yellow, should it be blue? needs brake liners, and the engine seal leaks I guess around the pan. main cylinder on the hoe leaks, rod bent, repacked and still leaks. little leak in power stearing. I think those racks are hard to come by. It's hard to tell if it has a rear PTO because of the hoe. Do all FSM have rear PTO's and arms to hang an atachment off if I took the hoe off? Thanks for any info!

Ryan

I paid $3000 in East Central Alabama for a 1962 Super Major with 712 loader and 723 backhoe, which I believe are the largest Ford units used. It had a leaky loader bucket cylinder and steering problems but a good low time engine and no drive problems. Only a very few parts for the power steering unit seem to be available. The problems I have encountered and you might watch for are as follows. One steering arm was loose on the spindle, both spindle and arm severely worn. Spindles are $100 to $150 each, the left side arm for power steering is not available. The steering gearbox was severely worn due to water and lack of oil and this seems to be common. The shaft and nut assembly and the bearings are available. The shaft and nut is about $300 from Ford as I recall. I am still trying to locate the parts to repair the steering cylinder. It's a nice powerful rig but some parts can be scarce and/or expensive. Hope this helps.
