Why are the specs for the FMD and FPM the same but a 10HP power difference exist?

Hi.
I was reading through my I&T Manual and came to the specs for the fordson power major and major diesel. Basicaly enerything about these 2 tractors is the same. (At least in the engine department) Even fuel consumption is the same. So I want to know how there is a 10HP difference between them. The Major Diesel having 40HP and power major having 50HP. I asked a few friends and they said it was true but they couldnt explain it. Can anyone here explain how it is possible. Thanks. L. Harvey

The Power Major got a completely re-designed head with better ports, new cam from the truck engine and larger plungers in the injector pump. HP was increased to 52hp. The Minimec pump was itroduced before the itroduction of the New Performence Super Major and did not give a hp increase. The New Performance Super got its hp increase to 54hp with a slight increase in revs and revised intake ports with the introduction of the ¨FL¨ cylinder head.

In 1957 the Fordson Major Diesel got a "new" motor: Mark II. The motor was basically the same than the previous one but there were some small changes made in order to get more power out of it. Externally the engine looked the same. They made some modifications for example to the valves, air intake, camshaft etc.

In 1958 the name of the tractor was changed to Power Major and there was also some little design changes such as the location of the throttle lever and instrument panel etc.

Later, when they changed the vacuum governor to the mechanical governor (New Performance Super Major), the power increased a little more.
