How do I raise the Liners on a 1956 FMD

Im thiking that maybe one or more of my liners have slipped down a bit and caused water to get onto the pistons when it stood. I haven't measured the clearance yet, but just so that I know, how do you raise the liners?

Ignore that, misread it. The most likly cause is a blown head gasket. As I said, liners cannot slip down. The worst case is if the liners have rusted through, in wich case read my other post.

The liners cannot slip down as they have a stepped top. The cause of the water leaking is the liner seals and most likely corosion caused by electrolysis. In either event you will need to remove the head, sump (pan) and pistons. You can then remove the sleeves with a home made puller.

I use a round half inch plate 100mm in diameter with a inch hole in the middle. This goes at the bottom of the sleeve. A piece of plate half in steel with a hole supported on either side of the cylinder by a block of wood at the top and a inch diam treaded rod with nuts on each end to connect the two. This will pull them out. They will be in real tight due to rust. Make sure you protect the crank while doing this. Dont damage it with the puller.

Inspect the grooves at the base of the block as these somtimes corode as well. You may get away with new o rings and plenty of high temp silicone sealer but it the sleeves are real bad you will need new ones.

Your engine should only require o rings at the bottom of the sleeve and if you need sleeves make sure they are the early type. Thes need to be shimmed at the top to get the correct protusion. If your tractor has the later engine fitted, there will be another thinner o ring at the top. If you have this engine, replace both o rings.
