I did like Dave. Bought a new starter for a Ford 3000. Cost just $125 and I didn't have to trade in the original. I have a picture of it on my FMD and I can email it to you. I haven't yet learned how to post pics with my replys.

Kelly, Any good auto-electrician should be able to clean and re-build your starter.

The starter went bad on my super major a few years ago, and I replaced it with a starter from a Ford 4000. Had to make a few modifications, like relocating the tool box and setting up a separate push button starter switch, but it wasn't that bad of a job, and the starter works great, a lot more pizzaz than the old one. If I remember right, parts for my original starter were either unavailable or very expensive.

I have a 55 FMD and the starter is bad, starter shop said no parts are available. Can get a replacement for $150 but will have to change the bendix as # of teeth is not correct. Question for Dave or TMAX, did you have to change bendix or will the 3000 & 4000 work?

Carl - I had to make a few modifications to my Super Major to accomodate the 4000 starter - like relocating the toolbox to the other side of the tractor and setting up a starter button on the lower instrument panel. And the oil diptick has to be curved slightly to get past the body of the new starter. But I didn't make any change to the starter itself, it bolted right in. What I don't know is if your Major is different from my Super Major in some way that would require a change in the bendix.
