hello have a luuurvely 62 standard dexta. steering is loose
, wheels wobble @ hi speed.
do i need new steering worm and track rod ends ? Would "towing in" the wheels cure the wobble. I realise of course that this would wear the tyres alittle more.

It's not all that simple to adjust the steering gear box but it can cause the shimmy too.

Yes setting the toe in will stop it.

You can also home make a bracket and install a shock absorber on each steering rod and it will stop the shimmy.

I never added the shocks myself but have seen it done several times. It takes the jerk out of the steering wheel in the field too, but does'nt effect the overall handling that I could tell.

burr
thanks for info on stering. Are the shocks fitted horizontally? Would the steering rods have to be cut to facilitate the shock absorbers?

Also, Does any one out there know if steering worms are available for the dexta?

One final raft of questions folks!!!

My Standard dexta's governor revvs up and down (slightly)especilly when cold . when it warms up it settles down to a nice even tickover. I have often seen standards so bad that they will cut out. mine is not as bad as that.

My questions in this connection are: Do i just live with it?
Can it be fixed cost effectivly ( I hate to part with cash ha ha ha!!!)
Could a Simms Pump from a Super Dexta be fitted?
(I dont recall super dextas giving this problem, if the conversion is possible would it give the little standard a abit of "zooooo oom"?

Thanks again

Henry Joyce

P.S

Some day soon, Iintend to put up a digital photo of my standard in addition to telling the story of our familys association with dextas and all things Fordson!!!
watch this space!!!

these fellers did'nt cut the rods. They added the shocks horizontal with the mount on the axle and extending back on each side. They use a U bolt type clamp to anchor it on the rods.

The Simms will fit the Dexta just remember to set the timing for a S-Dexta.

You probly have a vacuum leak in the gov line or, binding flap or dirty to be causing th rev problems. It's a minor fix.

There is no worm in the Dexta steering. The steering box has shims on each side to adjust the slack out of the shafts. There is a ball end on the shaft that wears down and lets slack in. You weld the ball and grind it smooth to the correct size.

I'll try to get my scanner back on line and post a pic in a few days.

You can also check your rubber hose coming off the intake manifold going to the air cleaner for a crack, or it might be loose sucking in air. Mine had this problem and this cured mine. Also don't buy the one from the dealership it's to high, go to an Advance auto store or some auto store in your neighborhood and have them to match it up with the bends on some of theres. It will be scuds cheaper. Let me know if this helps.
