I accidently put auto transmission oil in my diesel engine. Only about 1/4 quart before I caught my mistake. How big a problem is this? What should I do.

ATF will help clean the oil return ports of the motor as well as clean some of the crud that prevent the rings from slowly turning as the motor runs. I put anout one cup in my Dodge caravan every 20,000 miles and run it for about 50 miles before I dump the oil. ATF was used in the 40's, 50's, and 60's by many mechanics to clean sludge out of motors. Kero works good too. One bad result may be that you may smoke more when a worn engine is cleaned (rings). A good result may be you smoke less after the oil return ports are cleaned (oil build up in heads blows by the valve seals when return ports are plugged - which is common on most older Ford motors. If you do smoke more add some Lucas oil fortifier. Its like thin STP only better. Your oil preasure stays up when it's hot.

No worry atf in the oil pan is ok . Many major repair centers use atf as a cleaning agent in older diesel engines. run at low rpm and let it get warm drain warm change filters and oil you will be ok!

Just change the oil and filter. You should be ok.
