Burrhead, I took my 1960 Dexta over to the farm to pull some logs out of the way, and on the way over it started surging. When I got there (3 miles) it was starting to act really weird. It was running to fast, so I turned around and headed home running it on my kill pull out. When I got home it would run wide open all the time, no idle at all. I read up on my manual, and it said to check my air breather and clean it good, so I did. I also took off my rubber hose that connects to the intake manifold, it was alright to. So now I think it may have a bad diaphragm on the injector pump. That baby is expensive and I wanted to ask you what you thought before I went that route. Thanks

When you said you checked the air cleaner you do mean the one in the bottom of the pump huh???

One thing besides the diaphram and tube leaking I have seen is they build up gunk in the diaphram breather and the fuel control rod that goes from the diaphram into the injector pump will stick wide open.

When you have the diaphram out the fuel rod should slide in and outwards of the injector pump easily with just a screwdriver and no prying, just using hand force.

If it's binding a little just slide it in and out a few times to knock the rust or crud off it..

It was the oil bath air breather. I will check this rod you are talking about tomorrow, Lord willing. What should this diaphram look like if it's bad? Will it have a detectable hole in it? I've never been in this part of my tractor. Thanks for you help Burrhead.

Capbuster the air cleaner your book is talking about is in the bottom of the diaphram housing. You can't see it from the side unless you squat down, you'll have to look upwards at the bottom of the pump. It looks more like a drain plug bolt than and air cleaner. When you get it out it has a wire mesh wafer on it like is in the oil bath.

The diaphram is just a flat rubber disc with a spring attached to one side and a stroke rod attached to the other. To get the diaphram out you need to take it off the stroke rod by taking out the cotter key in the rod.

The diaphram looks almost identical to a gasoline fuel pump diaphram. If it has rotted the holes may be too small to see.

Before I took the thing apart I would check the throttle plate inside the manifold again to be sure it's not binding or dirty, check the air cleaner in the diaphram housing bottom, and pull vacuum on the line to the manifold to see if the diaphram is leaking.

I use a hand operated vacuum pump like you use to do a one man brake bleeding job to check fuel and vacuum lines for leaks.

Thanks Burrhead for the information. I checked all that already and it all looked good. The butterfly was working good, and I took that breather you talked about out and it was good. I cleaned it back earlier this year when I overhauled it. So today I looked at the diaphram and it has a split in it. I will call the dealer tomorrow and order me one. This thing looked like it was some kind of a seal the way it was in the housing of the injection pump, I got it out easy enough, but it's looks like it will be a tight fit going back. Any instructions I should know about? Also will any other tachometer fit the Dexta so a man can check how many rpm's this girl's running? Mine doesn't have one. I'll talk to you tomorrow night and tell you what's going on.

I don't know about the tach Capp. I use a hand held electric LED that all you do is point at the crankshaft pully and pull the trigger.

When I went back through what we had said I noticed I had made a mistake on the discription.

If the old diaphram is the original or a Ford replacement diaphram in it, the diaphram should be leather- it's not rubber unless somebody has replaced it before with and after market rubber diaphram.

You are right it fits into a groove in the housing like a seal. I use Vaseline on the diaphram to preserve and slick it a little bit, and a plastic tooth brush handle to seat it.

The only things I can think of to do when reinstalling is to rub the new diaphram down good with Vaseline Petro Salve, and you might take some super fine emery cloth and shine up the housing a little where the diaphram goes in it.

Sometimes the slot can be aggravating to hit, just be careful and make sure the new diaphram is seated good in the groove.

If you need a pic of any part of the tractor just holler and I'll either figger out how to use my new scanner, or I can fax a copy to you.

It was made out of leather Burrhead so it is orginal equipment. I called the dealer today and like to had a heart attack. I looked like old Sanford holding his chest and saying "I'm coming home Elizabeth" or and old widder woman screaming somebody's got me by my pocket book. LOLOLOL. That thing was $143.00. My dealer told to call a Massey Ferguson dealer and see if I could get it cheaper. I did and they don't even stock it, so I asked where did they send there injector pumps to to get serviced, she said Pro Diesel out of Tenn. I ask for there number and she said she would give it to me, but they wouldn't sell me any parts. I told her it was worth a try and low and behold I bought one off of them for $100.00. I still think that's high. How much is it in Texas Burrhead? I will do as you say on putting it back in. I will let you know when I get it. Thanks. I got me a new scanner and I can't run it yet either. LOLO

I'll try to find a price today Capp. Abilene Machine might have the thing I'll see.

Wowee $140 for 1/2 a shoe tongue is 4 times too high. The $100 is still too high too but a little better.

Burrhead I got the part in less than 24 hours after I ordered it, now that was fast wasn't it? I went to put it on and I didn't have a small enough hitch pin, you know the ones that look like a bobby pin (That ole widder woman use in there hair) I laugh about that all the time. LOLL I will try to get the ole girl up and around in the morning. Thanks for all you help and knowledge Burrhead. I'll let you know tomorrow night how things are doing. And sumpen else what's that LED Digetal thing of a what cha ma call it that you check the rpms with. I've never heard of this before. Take care

Keep us informed Capp. You're more than welcome and I linked a tachometer in here so you can look see.

The one we use does'nt have to have the reflector tape you just make a mark with chalk on the pully.

Boy she is running good good good. The best it's ran since the overhaul. That thing has been going bad since April I believe. Me and my neighbor made a fan shroud for the radiator last week. I took it over to the farm today and pulled some logs and graded the road back to the cabin and it didn't get hot or even half way. My next project for the old girl is to put a new axle seal and get my brakes working on the right side. Maybe I will do that next week. Thanks Burrhead your a good man and friend. Take care now.
