Am I on the right track with regards to oils if i use the following... delvac 1330 in the engine. 80 - 90W gear oil in the gearbox and 15W-40 in the hydraulic & diff case. ???? I'm in southeast queensland Australia, Year round temps range from mid single figures to high thirties. ( Centigrade ). The info on the SAE 30w oil for the gearbox came out of the owners manual. Unfortunately the last two pages are missing so i have no info on hydraulic oil. Is it possible to rationalise oils to say a 1330 for the engine & one other for the rest of the machine ( Dexta )I hope you can help. cheers..

People,
In one of his replies in this discussion, Burrhead provided an image taken from my website. Now, I don't mind free advertising but there's something weird about this image. It lists gearbox oil specs for the Dexta which are clearly wrong.

DO NOT use 90/140W oil in any part of a Dexta, particularly the hydraulics!!

All other documents on my site list the correct oil specs, EXCEPT this one. I hadn't noticed the difference before, but an alert reader notified me of it.

Hello Oscar. This is a question not and argument.

What is the linked in manual and what does your other manuals say to use?

I have I&T and it also calls for 80W and 90W. I've always used 80 or 90 and have'nt had a problem.

The only problem I've ever seen was when a neighbor had put Hi-Trans hydraulic oil in his Dexta. It was very weak and would'nt lift implements so we switched it back to gear oils and it has done fine.

Burrhead, only the "Dexta Owner's Manual" on my site lists the 90/140 oil for gearbox and hydraulics. I hadn't noticed this before. 90/140 is too thick and may cause damage. All other documents on my site list the correct values at different temperatures.

For the engine, see http://fordson.freeweb.nl/manuals/scans/(super)dexta_exportmanual_specs_1.jpg

For the gearbox and hydraulics, see http://fordson.freeweb.nl/manuals/scans/(super)dexta_exportmanual_specs_2.jpg

The coming week, I'll take down the page Burrhead copied in his earlier reply in this thread.

There's no problem Oscar. I appreciate the info.

I would be leery of the 140W myself even in my hot climate.

Paul,

I have been using Castrol Agri MP (Plus) in my 62 Super dexta for two years now here at Canberra, and whether the weather is below freezing (-5C) or in the mid-high 30's, it has been fine. Same oil in engine, transmission and rear axle. No problems with the hydraulic lift using it in the axle. Local Dexta dealer (for 40 years) recommended it to me.

Cheers

Steve

Paul

I have a Super Dexta hand book at home, I will check tonight unless Burhead answers(I am in Victoria). Burrhead, when Paul says "high 30's" he means 100 in your speak.

Thanks Steven. The temp conversion is helpful.

I don't have my scanner plumbed in to copy so I borrowed a link to Oscar's manuals.

With our local temps I always use 80-90W. Our local temp rarely gets below 30-40 F at night.

When I was a boy we usually had snows and ice in Dec and Jan. The last snow we had was in 1986 or 87. We may have to change types and weight of oils as global warming increases.

Burrhead

What year is that book of yours? Mine is the 1963 New Performance Super Dexta and Dexta and its 30w above 20F and 20W below 20F or 20/30W for all temps, thats in the gearbox and back axle. Fords changed the oils on Majors around 58, must of done the same with Dextas.

Mine says it's a 1963 copywrite too Steven.

It covers Dexta S-Dexta Ford 2000 Dexta New Performance S-Dexta

I have noticed before that sometimes the manuals clash.
