I acquired my Greatgrandfathers 1922 Fordson Model F. Recently my dad and I got it running. The tractor has set for sometime and had not been ran. We were able to start it with a battery, after it ran for a while I switched it over on the mag and it ran. The other day I try running it on the magneto, but it didn't seem to be working again, tractor would run on battery though. Any suggestions on getting Magneto back in shape?

Bill,
I've been on the Fordson tractor circut for a number of years and belive it or not, you are the first individual I've run across who can trace the original ownership to an immediate relative. Did your great grand father buy the unit new and by long chance, is there any surviving paperwork around? Adam hit the nail on the head when he asked if you had the battery connected to the mag stud.
If you started the enging on battery and switched over to mag and it ran, than for all purposes the mag is good. However, if you didn't disconnect the battery and DC voltage fed back to through the mag stud, you may have never run on mag or demagnatized it. There is an old Fordson/Model T owner from Southeastern Massachusettes who has recharged a mag without spliting the engine. Sounds impossible to me but, this gentleman is a clever guy. One other long shot. The mag stud contact is spring loaded and if there is little or no tension, the connection could be intermittant. I'd remove and check the stud and if necessary replace it before it before splitting the engine. Short money at the Fordson House in Escanaba, Michigan. No matter, you have an old Fordson with with direct lineage to you immediate family, do what you need to do.

Did you have the battey lead and the lead going to the flywheel plug hooked up at the same time together? the current from the battery can demagnitize the magnets on the flywheel, thus no spark. to repair you have to split the tractor and recharge the magnets.
