Small Hole.....

On the left handside of the transmission case on a dexta, forward of the shift levers, there is a small hole. Inside the hole I can see what I believe to be the shifter rails ( it moves when I move the gear lever ). There is oil weeping out of this hole. Is there supposed to be a plug of some sort in this hole? The hole doesnt seem to be threaded. Its the only leak on the whole tractor after My recent efforts to rebirth the old girl & it's annoying the proverbial out of Me.
Any info on My " weeping hole " would be appreciated. Cheers..... Paul..8^)

Paul I could'nt find a hole of any kind on my Super D so I went and looked at a neighbors Dexta. Neither of these have any kind of hole anywhere ahead of the shifters.

Somebody may have drilled a hole instead of rebuilding the shift rails at some point. An ice pick stuck down the rails with a slight pry would unhang the tranny when it locked in reverse.

On old style truck trannies I have whittled down a stick then put silicone on it and jammed into weep holes. That works good. Just shave it off with a knife and paint over it so nobody is the wiser.

Thanks for the idea Burrhead. The hole is a cast hole on the left hand SIDE of the gearbox housing not ontop of the gearbox housing but forward of the gearlevers. Did that make any sense?

Yes you make perfect sense. For some reason I assumed wrongly you meant on the tranny top.

I went back and rechecked the housings.

There is a non threaded hole there on both these tractors that is plugged with a plastic knock-in plug. When I took one out to look the back end of the plug is moist but not overly oily at all.

This plug looks like a cap off of a tube of silicone caulking. Just a round plastic cap about 1/2 inch long and pushed down flush
