I recently purchased an old Fordson that has been sitting in a field in Canada for a while. I was wondering what are common problems with fordsons.
What to look for when I get it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Steve.

Steve, where abouts do you reside in Canada,I live in Ontario, actually on an Island in Lake Ontario.I have been restoring a 1922 F fordson, and like the other post said a manual is the first thing you should get.I have found the coil boxes to be my biggest obstical to overcome, had a lot of trouble figuring out which ones were good.I just bought new spark plugs for it,they take a champion 25 which has a 1/2" pipe thread on it.Feel free to EMail me anytime,I have some extra parts and know a man that has a pile of parts that He would probly part with. He's been collecting fordson's for about 25 yrs.Ebay have a lot of parts as well. GOOD LUCK!!! Will

My first recommendation is to find a manual for it. A lot of things are explained in detail to help you make repairs and/or adjustments. Search this site for "Fordson parts" to get names and phone numbers of parts suppliers.

Electrical: The Fordson uses the same ignition system as the Ford Model T - unless someone has added an aftermarket magneto. There is a generator built into the flywheel to supply power to the ignition system. There are magnets on the flywheel itself which can become weak.

Mechanical: Pretty simple. No oil pump, water pump, nor brakes to worry with. Don't try to pull it to start it. Final drive is a bronze worm/ring gear that can be ruined with one good tug. Unless the head has the words "high compression" cast in the top, the engine will roll through compression fairly easily. Manifolds cracks are common as are missing carburetors and vaporizers. Different makers supplied manifold systems so you will need to know what you have when getting parts. Kingston and Holley are just a couple of them. Air is filtered by a thing Henry called an "Air Washer." That is the cast iron tank looking thing between the engine block and the steering gear. Inside is a tin float that most likely has rusted and will choke off the air supply to the engine when it is down.

In all, it is a fairly straightforward machine. Parts can be expensive so budget accordingly. Post back when you have specific questions. Best wishes and enjoy your Fordson.
