I just purchased a Irish model N Fordson and I read somewhere the worm gear on the model F can be damaged if started by pulling. Does this go for the model N also? Any comments would be appreciated.

has been lots of discussion thru the years about wether or not you can pull start a Fordson. the major obstacle is to over come the worm gear drive ratio. the worm gear has the leverage advantage over the bull gear. many people claim that if you attemt to pull start the fordson wheels will just slip. this is true if you try to start in first gear. if you move to second gear and slip the clutch it works fine, I have done it many times. the only damage it might do is if the splines inside the gear that drive the worm are are so worn out it might strip out these splines. For the first time start-up I would reccomend belt starting the tractor( provided you have a belt pulley). Use the pull starting if you flood it out.
