A week or two ago i was talking to a friend of mine who is a keen tractor enthusiast,(as am i)we got to the subject of tandem tractors, i then said that i thought if i set my mind to it i could make one, in return he said to me "make a doe triple D" so not wanting to back down i took him up on his challenge.I am a professional engineer with a very substantial workshop at my disposaland i now have the two fordson major skid units and wish to make the replica as close to origional as possible. As so i was wondering if anyone knew of where i could find the plans to make the turn table and steer assembly also the hydraulic gear change mechanism and if anyone knows of any good books on the tractor i would be grateful to know ( i have the doe story by Stuart Gibbard) many thanks Will

I have considerd the same, I have a Super Major and would love to make a Super Major Doe. Why dont you contact Ernest Doe tractor dealers and ask direct. They may sell a copy of the plans. Other than that I have thought of making a mock up using marine ply and then using the ply as a template to get the steel cut. I would use the turntable from a semi trailer hitch. They are ball race and about 2 foot in diameter. I would consider using a beter gear shift for the front tractor, maybe solonoid/air.

Let me know how you go.

Mayby a little late, as this is over a year old now...but.. why don't use the turn table of a small mobile crane? offcourse it would be very nice to build an original ..but i thinks it may be a little inmpossible..as the original turntables were eh.. made of liquid iron which they put into a schape (you know what i mean, i'm dutch and my english isn't the best you know).
I also thougt abouw it to make it myself (after I had bougth two majors.....)
but the gear shift system would be nice detail...

the steering part is'nt that difficult, because it's just a large cilinder... just like an articulated wheelloader...you should get some ideas from photo's....

good luck and please send me an email if you got some progressions...

I have researched the doe for some time, making small scale models or conversions as we tiny engineers call them from bits of broken toys. Not so much detail is used in the small ones but they look great. On one of my many tours of the tractor shows I came across a Min'moline dual drive tractor. I was quite taken back as the skids were late forties, very early fifties, much earlier than the doe's production ones. On furthe investigation it had been made not so long ago as a practical project for someone to make a higher powerd tractor. I did not get the full story as the guy who made it was not around, but would be worth looking into. Good Luck from "the rodders"
