Super Major vs Ford 5000

Hello all,

I have the opportunity to purchase either a Super Major or a Ford 5000 with selectashift (is that selectospeed?). I will be using it to replace my Ford 8N in my fruit orchard. The Super Major is $2000 Canadian with original rubber and the double clutch PTO system, while the Ford 5000 is $5200 Canadian with Live PTO. Typical jobs would be mowing between the rows, subsoiling to eliminate hard pan, plowing, pulling a sprayer, snowblowing, front-end loading.

Which tractor would be best suited for my operation?

Thanks all!

Hey, I own a supermajor, it replaced my Jubilee, which replaced my 8N. I think the supermajor is the way to go. I've never been a fan of the selectospeed(and I don't know anyone who is). The supermajor has 6 forwaed and two reverse speeds. I used mine a few weeks ago in the woods skidding logs. It was as nimble as either ford I had and 57 hp. This is my first fordson, and I am very impressed with how well it was built, and how it performs. I think for the money, you can't go wrong. Just looking at the prices you quoted you could buy 2 fordsons and sink quite a bit of money into them, before you paid for the 5000. The 5000 is an awesome machine, don't get me wrong, but when you weigh the prices, I'd go with the fordson. I'm sure it will do all you ask of it, and you won't be disappointed.

I worked on a 4000. The thing was huge. I think a 5000 is the same size. I don't know how much use a monster like that would be in an orchard. I'd look for for a Super Dexta or 35 Massey. I'm no expert, but that's my spin.

THE ONLY DRAWBACK TO THE 5000 IS THE SELECTOSPEED TRANSMISSION. OTHER THAN THAT THE 5000 IS A MUCH BETTER MACHINE. IN MY OPINION THE 5000 IS THE TOUGHEST TRACTOR FORD EVER MADE. I HAVE TWO 5000'S AND A 4000. EITHER TRACTOR WOULD WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. THE 4000 MIGHT BE A BETTER CHOICE THAN EITHER OF THE TRACTORS YOU'RE LOOKING AT. MAYBE YOU SHOULD HOLD OUT FOR ONE OF THEM. ALSO THE 5000 HAS TOTAL LIVE POWER WHICH IN MY OPINION IS MUCH BETTER THAN A TWO STAGE CLUTCH.
