I have 57 fordson major diesel with a loader on the front.Have had it for about 6months with pretty good results. I just picked up a bushhog. The bushhog is attached and functioning, sort of. The problem is that when I go to start the bushhog I have a hard time getting the pto engaged and getting the tractor into drive at the same time. Whichever I do first goes just fine. If I put the transmission into gear, the pto doesn't want to go into gear.It is like once the pto is engaged I can't get the transmission synchronized to go into first gear.Or if I first put it into gear to drive, then I have a hard time getting to pto to engage, like the gears won't match timing.I can get a little agressive with it and it will go but it makes more noise than I like.I am really hoping I just don't yet know what I am doing and there is very simple solution, like I am opperating the clutch wrong or something. Thanks, frankg

YOU NEED A SLIP CUTCH THAT GOES ON THE PTO SHAFT AND THE BUSHOGG SHAFT THAT WILL ATTEM TO THE SLIP CUTCH AND MOST FARM TRACTOR DEALS CARE IT

If you have a 57 FMD it will not have a two stage clutch. I agree that the best way is to put the pto in gear first, if you cannot get the transmission into gear then just feather the clutch a little and it will pop into gear OK. The two stage live pto came with the Power Major in 58.

That would sound like pretty much normal operations with a non-live pto, but the other person says yours should be live. I'm not familiar with your model....

Without live pto, putting one part into gear usually makes the other set of gears you want to lock together not want to line up easily. You have to just barely feather the clutch to get the other set of gears to move a tiny bit & get the gears to line. Takes a very light touch with the foot...

Shouldn't be much of a problem with a 2-stage, altho it would show up a bit.

Does the FMD have two settings on the clutch connector arm like the Dexta ? Follow the linkage towards the clutch release arm & see if there are 2 holes. If so, the rear one is for use when using pto implements. The forward one is for use with drag implements, & saves using the pto clutch when not in use. Hope that helps. Am a novice Myself so I may be barking up the wrong tree.

Are you pushing the clutch all the way down? Another thing I have learned with the FMD is if it won't go into gear, let out the clutch and then put it in again. It might be a problem with your tractor, because I have never really had a problem with mine.

What you have is a live pto with a two stage clutch. As you push the clutch in it will disengage the transmision first, then as you keep pushing down, it will disengage the pto. This gives you live power at your pto. You can push the clutch in and change gears, or let the tractor coast and still have power to the pto. ( lets say you're brush hogging and you hit some deep tall grass and the tractor bogs down, push the clutch in part way, the tractor stops moving, but the pto still turns and clears out the brush hog, rpms pick up and you can let the clutch out and never lose any power to your brush hog). Your problem is that either you're not pushing the clutch ALL the way in to fully disengage it. (My Super Major's clutch has to be pushed almost flat with the running board), or your clutch is out of adjustment. I'll bet you're not pushing it in all the way. you get used to using the first stage of the clutch to change gears, and think the clutch is all the way in at that point when it is not. Try that and see what happens.
