Removal of engine to replace crankshaft

Can anyone suggest a SAFE way to support the engine on a 54 Major D. I'm going to replace the crank and bearings, can the side frame supports stay on and be used to support the engine. It doesn't look like they can stay on because of the front plate, is that correct?

I have a hoist, but not an engine stand. If I buy an engine stand, which holes should the stand be bolted to?

Could I remove two head bolts and replace them with an eye bolt, and hang the engine from the hoist?

What will work and what will not?

Thanks

Scott, you will have to split the tractor, as this is the only way to remove the clutch/flywheel from the crankshaft. I usually block up the back half of the tractor with a heavy jack stand or wood blocking just behind the bell housing, after breaking loose all hardware, “wiring, fuel lines, coolant hoses, etc”. Remove the front clip as one piece, front axel, radiator and shroud, and frame rails unbolted from the front engine mount and bell housing, you will also have to remove the steering drag link from the pitman arm and the wishbone from the oilpan. Now you should have the engine still hanging on the bell housing, use a cherry picker to remove it, remove the clutch & flywheel and its ready to go on a engine stand for some work.
