Flywheel Ring...

I have my Dexta split in half replacing the rear oil seal. The teeth on the flywheel ring are somewhat worn. I was wondering if the flywheel ring can be turned over to use the other side of the teeth, or is it doweled to use just one side?

Thanks for the support.

John

John you can also heat the ring and with a dull drift or rod spin the ring to a fresh set of teeth. The reason the teeth wear so much in one location is the engine always stops in the same spot unless you stall the engine with the brake. The trick is to heat the ring real good and it'll turn fairly easy. GOOD LUCK WILL

it will turn over and fit back. In the past I have had trouble with the ring not staying seated but after I started putting high torque Loctite on the flywheel to lock the ring down it stopped the problem

Burrhead, thanks for the reply.

I just got done replacing my rear oil seal on the cranckshaft. Was pretty proud of myself....
Until I ran the tractor for about 3 minutes...
It leaks worse now than before I took it apart.
I had found your notes and followed your method.
I dont know what to do now. I dont know of anything different I would do. Im getting a drip about every 15 seconds. Any other suggestions?

John the rear seal is usually a no problem fix. Did you clean the area??? Sometimes the residue oil will drip for awhile after a fix as the oil gets hot and cleans the bellhousing.

A couple of things I have either done wrong or have seen done wrong are,

1. cutting the new seal too short, thereby leaving a slight gap that won't seal

2. leaving the seal ends too long, thereby not letting the caps come completely closed and leaking past the seal.

3. breaking the gasket that goes between the seal retainer and the engine block.

When I put in a new rear seal I put the seal into the caps and soak them over night or at least several hours in clean oil to let the seal soak and swell. Then I cut the new ends off with snips so there is about 1/8th" of the new seal sticking up out of the caps.

Then I clean the oil off the caps and put a very thin swipe of high temp silicone on the cap ends and engine side of the caps.

John,
I did the same thing to mine twice. It still leaked!! I ran it for a while and then looked at the color of the oil. If the oil is black then you have done something wrong as burrhead has said. If the oil is a lighter color then you will have to put new oil seals in the input shaft of the transmission. There are two of them and it is not a hard job. I have the seal numbers from FNH, and a supplier if you need them. I hope this helps. Capp
