I have a 1959 Dexta (diesel) that needs the fuel pump rebuilt. It has a Simms #SPE 3A60S 593 on it. Is there any where on the web I might find a exploited drawing and maybe a rebuild kit to order? Thanks in advance for any info.

Brant

How do you know that you need to replace the diaphragm? Have you tested it? If Not try this....
Remove the line from the diaphragm housing..... ..
Place your finger over the hole..... ..... ..... .
Pull the stop lever all the way & then release it.
Keep your finger over the hole for 10 seconds....
Remove your finger & listen for the diaphragm returning to its rest position....
If it returns when you uncover the hole, nothing wrong with the diaphragm. If it returns whilst your finger is over the hole there is a leak in the diaphram.
If your Dexta "hunts" or smokes a bit, causing you to suspect the diaphragm, first ensure that both ends of the pipe between the diaphragm housing & the intake manifold are sealed. If your Dexta revs up & then settles back a little when you increase engine speed, this can be caused by wear on the pin that attaches to the metal rod in the centre of the diaphragm.

FNH wanted $189 Australian for a new one. I rang my local diesel injection shop & was told the parts for the olds Simms pumps were all still available. I'm sure I've seen other postings of people getting the diaphragms for around $60. Not sure which currency that is though. Which part of the world are you from? Try the workshops that service injectors & pumps for the part if you havent already found one. Shop around a bit though as prices for the older parts tend to vary considerably. Good luck.

Paul - I've got the diaphram out now, and in the process of finding another at a reasonable price. One of the bolts that hold the canister on "backed" out and was in the bottom of the canister behind the diaphram. I think this is what got the the problem started. The diaphram had two small holes in it on the bottom side where the bolt was found. Any ideas on where to locate a new one at a reasonable price? Thanks for your reply, Brant

Hi Brant, I just had the same problem with a huge hole in the diaghram. You can easily repair the old one and it will work fine. I just used a little rubber cement it was kind of like fixing a flat. I'm telling you, it worked great and it's been successful for a little over a year now

Majorman - Thanks for the reply. My post sounds abit misleading. What I need is the diaphram replaced in it, not a total rebuild. I'm looking for instructions on how to get it out so I may can have it matched up at a diesel injection shop. Thanks again, Brant

Brant,
I would suspect that you do not have the facilities to service the pump. You need lots of test equipment and a dust proof room in which to do it. This is really a job for the experts as one piece of grit in the wrong place can ruin the pump.
