Hi Folks, Im hoping to get a few suggestions. I have a 1957 FMD, Heres the problems I'm having:
1)-Gas(air) was leaking into coolant area and it was bubbling the coolant out the top of the rad.
2)-Got a new Head Gasket, and gasket would not seal. 3)-Got the whole head done and valves ground/replaced and it still leaks.

Is it possible that one of the sleaves came up? If so, is there any way it can be tapped back down? Could it be something else I'm missing?
Please help, any suggestions?
Thanks Jim S.

The coolant is getting right into the cylinders (and oil) due to no seal between head and block.
Thanks for suggestion. More comments are welcome.
Jim S.

Addendum to my message- Caution , Donot use oxygen as a source of high pressure air.You should not require more than average compression pressure.

If all else fails, look for a porous cylinder.I have had a personal experience with this problem. All liners appeared to be perfect with heads removed, but compression leak into coolant side would blow coolant out of the system. Remove all spark plugs.Remove rocker arms or if flat head engine move pistons to bottom dead ctr.then with intake and ehx.valves closed introduce high pressure air into cylinders one at a time while observing what occurs in the cooling system. There maybe a leaking cylinder liner. In my case it showed up immediately. I pulled the liner an found one area on the water side, looking like a sponge. It held water ok but compression leaked to the coolant system. Good luck

The FMD only had an O ring at the bottom of the sleeve, when this fails coolant goes into the oil.you need to check that the head is flat and that the liners protude 2 thou above the block ,this seals the combustion chamber If they do not stand proud then there are shims you can buy to raise the liner

Was the head magna fluxed (checked for cracks) and was the head milled flat as part of the rebuild? Also, was the headgasket the same type that you removed? There are two of them. If the additive for the coolant wasn't used then electrolysis might have damaged a liner.

Jim,
there are o-rings that seal the cylinder liners in the FMD. This might be the cause of your problem. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge on the subject can elaborate more.

You could have electrolysis in sleeves and also the ring grooves in block. They can get eaten away but can be repaired easily.
