Dexta intake/air cleaner/idle questions

I have a '64 (I think) Dexta w/ 3 cyl Perkins. I bought it a couple years ago and don't use it very much. Always noticed it seems not to be running at high enough RPM's even at full throttle. I decided yesterday to remove the air cleaner and take a look. I cranked the engine and it idles much higher as I believe it should. My questions:

The bottom of the canister contained what's equivalent to about 5 or 6 small spoonfulls of oil. with a VERY dirty wire mesh filter (which I can remove.) The upper canister was just as filthy with about a 20% clogged center tube. Is the upper (large one) wire mesh filter removable and replaceable? Where can I find new wire mesh filters?

Lastly, will it harm the engine in any way to install a simple cone type air filter on to the intake and do away with these wire mesh filters and canister?

Sorry for being so long, but I feel the details are important. Thanks!!

-Chris

Chris - I purchased my Super Dexta new in l963 and still have it. Take your entire air cleaner off and immerce it in a pail of diesel fuel for a few days to soften up the goop. After a few days, flush that wire mesh several times. That should clean up your problem. Those oil-bath air cleaners are very dependable if serviced regularily. Make sure you replace the oil to its proper level in the cup before replacing.

Thanks for the info, Jim. So, is the wire mesh filter in the upper portion of the canister removeable, cause I kinda booger'd it up when I tried to remove it which leads to my final question. Would there be harm in replacing this air cleaner with a standard high flow cone type air filter (kind of like the ones you see in performance auto parts shops)? Thanks!!

For my money, I'd just go to a wreckers and get a replacement oil-bath. That model was used on many different makes and should be no problem to replace for very few dollars. Personally, I'd have more faith in the oil-bath than a dry filter. Remember that oil-bath has been around for a long time and works better in dusty conditions before needing changed and you've gotten 40 yrs. from the present system.

Very true. I guess the oil bath has provided excellent service over the years. Now, will I need to replace the entire canister or can I replace the wire mesh filter? I couldn't get some of the wire mesh out of the canister (if it's even supposed to come out...) How much oil should be inside the lower canister? Thanks for all the help!

Personally , I'd just buy the entire unit from stem to stern. As I said, those oil-baths were used on all tractors of that vintage and are very plentifull. That unit has the wire mesh perminately installed in the upper body combined with a shallow wire mesh filter in the oil cup body. The proper oil level is indicated by a line on the interior of the oil bowl. My Dexta is at our other farm which is ten miles away. I hope I haven't got the Dexta filter confused with my 5000 oil-bath but I believe they are quite similar. I have to go there tomorrow and if I'm wrong , I'll get back to you.

A permanently installed upper filter explains my trouble in removing it... I'll look for an entire replacement. Thanks, Jim. I appreciate your assistance.
