Fordson Major D Question

I noticed last night while servicing the battery on my tractor that there was a very narrow diameter line running from the backside of the fuel tank over the battery box and into the manifold (I think, was getting dark out). At some point this line must have come into contact with the positive terminal on the battery and appears to have been severed. I have noticed no difference in the operation of the tractor, but it does appear as though fuel is leaking from the manifold side of this broken line. What is it and what is its function? I plan to fix it but was curious as to what its purpose was?

This line returns the "Leak Off" fuel from the injectors during operation. After the injector fires, any excess fuel in it is returned to the tank. There is little to no pressure on this line so it is simple to repair. Mine had a wear hole, so I cut out the worn spot, removed the tank side and matched it up with a piece of steel automotive brake line and a compression coupling from a local auto supply store. The factory end screwed right into the tank and sealed nicely (I used some pipe dope on the fitting threads just in case) and a compression fitting with brass ferrules worked good to couple the two pieces together. It's a lot cleaner on that side of the engine now.

Thanks Jerry, will replace it this weekend, potential for a fire looks pretty good and I don't need that.

Greg, I just notice you mentioned that it was the Positive terminal of the battery that may have been in contact with the fuel line. When you remove the battery, check for polarity first. My FMD is a '55 and is wired with a Positive ground. The Negative terminal is closest to the fuel line.
