Peter,
The actual part I messed with is just behind the oil filler plug on top of the pump. I am looking at an I&T manual and I can see that it was not the max speed screw. There is no description of this part or its function. I definitley gave it a few turns and I doubt it is back at its original setting. No clues as far as paint marks. What is the function of this slotted stud with the 1/2" tightening nut?

Woog,

Peter is exactly right. The screw adjusts the maximum governor position. This should only be adjusted on test equipment to get the correct setting and it is a trial and error job if you have moved it.
