I just bought a 1957 Fordson Major. It is a gas tractor and with this year model will it be a power major or simply a mojor? Should it have live lift or power? It runs good but I was told it should be live and it is not. Also it has a whineing noise in all gears and I was told by the same person that was normal for that tractor so is this true? As you can tell I know nothing about this tractor so if anyone wants to tell me anything they know about this tractor whether I asked it on not it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

About your 57 major I have a feb.57 major with original horndraulick front end loader, it doesnot have a live pto and there for no live hydraulics to , the oil pump is in the back of the gearbox and is driven by the pto shaft after the pto clutch and that means that the pto has to be running if you want to use hydraulick. It was possible to buy an optional gearbox including an extra pto clutch so you could use hydraulick whitout the pto running.Mine also makes a lot of noise coming from the gears but that is not normal I advise you to rebuild it with new bearings. The subscript oil for (my) gearbox is sae 90.

I have a 57 fmd and it is a power major. There should be no whining coming from the gear box. Did you check the fluid level? I have had several of these machines but they have been setup as loader backhoes. All four of my machines have been diesels. It's my understanding that 90% of 1950 and up model years were diesels. I suspect that you may have to change some bearings.

Hope this helps
