ole, My Dexta starts with a "bump." After rebuild, I have yet to use the primer pump and glow plug again. Prior to rebuild, it was VERY hard to start. My compression rings fell out like shelled corn (ether by previous owner).
Rebuild and injector rebuild are the trick.

My old girl has way too much blow by on the rings, badly needs the engine rebuilt ( scheduled for the new year) and yet she starts within 3 to 4 turns. What was wrong with your original starter? I have found the spring on the brushes on the bottom brush tend to corrode & break. If your machine has had a rear main seal leak for a long time you might find the starter is covered in oil inside. If so, wash it out with methylated spirit, mine worked fine after a clean & replacement of the spring I mentioned. Also, on the area where the brushes sit, there should be gaps in the copper area, straight lines, over time these become filled in. Use a broken hacksaw blade to carefully scrape out the gap. I cant quite think of the correct names for these parts at the moment ( commutator gaps, perhaps? ). Someone else may make a better fist of explaining.
If not , let Me know & I'll try again. The other thing I would look for would be bad earths on the wiring. I installed an extra earth on the starter solonoid to earth it better to the frame. ( the item I refer to here is on the right handside of the battery area )Once again, probably a bad description. I do have some photo's which might help.Good luck, let us know how you get on with it.

The reasons I described before are probably the cause of the slow weak start with the old starter. Rustle up the old one & give her an overhaul. They take some killing those old starters. The bad earth makes for low voltage draw which equates to high current & gets the units hot real quick. The fact that your still having trouble with a different starter suggests it wasnt the starter causing the problem in the first place. I was about to buy a new one and as a last ditch effort refurbished every electrical connection connected to the starter system in any way. This exercise not only saved me money but alerted me to the poor earth on that solonoid.
