Hi
I have a fordson major diesel w/ front loader & backhoe .I have no idea what year it is? Do you know where the vin #s are on the engine. I found a Vin plate on the firewall but it's unreadable.

Thanks
Mike

Had a Major a few years back. If I remember correctly, the serial number was found like on the firewall behind & above engine near battery box.

The stamping on my FPM equates to it being built Jan 1960, but that plate you describe says April 1960. So I guess that was how long it took between the tractor being made, to when it arrived in Australia.

look on the front right side of the block, just under the seam of the head there will be a flat machined section about 1/2 inch in hieght and 2 inches wide the numbers should be stamped there

Ron
The machined pad was never stamped no numbers ? I replaced a broken cast crankshaft a few years ago with a NEW Steel crank! We just matched the new one to the old . But the guy i got the crankshaft from said that ford/fordson was replacing the cast cranks with new steel units back when the tractors were new! Mine just took longer to brake? And this tractor has a Heavy Duty Hoe unit & Loader but looks factoryish? I posted a few pictures of the Major on my web page. Link below..

On a 1953 Major the serial number is stamped on the flange behind the starter motor.

The cast crank was rather weak and was replaced early in the tractors life with a steel version. I still have a cast version in my tractor and had it ground to .010" a couple of years ago when a bearing failed. The steel cranks and most of the parts are still available.

What's the trick to stop the coolant from leaking around the throttle shaft that passes through the block ? Is there a packing seal ?
I looked for the vin by & behind the starter , can't see any #s guess i have to pull the starter ?

Fordsons were built in the UK and they were Fords tractor and had nothing to do with Massey Ferguson or Ferguson. Hope this helps. SAm in NS
