I recently purchased a timber boat powered by a ford lees 4cyl. diesel motor for which Iam now trying to identify the model. The boat was built in 1953 (approx.) and Iam sure its the original motor but nothing i read matches up with the numbers on my boat. The casting numbers on the block are 6050J & below that, J3167. The Letters FL are also on the block together with numbers 397540. Any advice would be appreciated as i have a few mates laughing at my latest boating change.

Are the letters FL on the block or on the cylinder head? Do you see any part numbers "E1ADDN" on the engine? Is the injector pump driven by a exposed drive shaft?

Steven, Iam sure the letters FL are on the block. The injector pump has an exposed drive shaft and i have not seen any other numbers except those mentioned but i will have a better chance this weekend to have a look.I appreciate your comments

Steven, I have just checked the boat again and must correct the earlier reply, the letters FL are on the head and not the block. The only number on the block is 397540 all others are on the head. Iam not able to see any other numbers after having a good look around.

If the letters FL on the head are close to number one injector then the engine you have is a 1962/3/4 Ford 592E 220cid Diesel. Its the same engine as fitted to the Fordson New Performance Super Major tractors (known in the USA as the Ford 5000 Super Major). In its industrial form its about 57hp (the tractor version is 54hp and the truck version 62). Parts for that engine are easy to get in most countrys.
