We have a 1954 Fordson Major Tractor and a manual for it but ours is different than the manual. Ours has the Hydraulic pump mounted on the outside of the engine. It also has a backhoe attachment and a hydraulic blade. It has a hydraulic reservoir for the fluid under the backhoe controls. The attachments are now moving very slow. The manual states it may be due to a plugged hydraulic filter. It says the pump and filter are in the transmission, but this tractor the pump is on outside. Does anyone know where the hydraulic filter is on this type?

The external pump you mention is it at the rear of the tractor on the PTO shaft? Somewhere there may be an in line filter on the inlet pipe or something as simple as a fine mesh sieve plate on the inlet to the pump (probably the larger diameter pipe). The internal pump has a sediment filter which can be accessed by removing the dished plate on the underneath of the back end of the tractor. Get more advice first as there will be 10 gallons of oil above this plate and gravity may take place depending on your model of tractor. Some tractors had valves to stop the oil running out when filter was removed - some didn't!

Have fun!

Steve - I think it's possoble that you have two hydraulic systems on this tractor. One is the external one that operates the backhoe, and is probably a non-factory system added on later. The other is the original system that operates the 3 point hitch and is located internally under the seat. It's this system that your amnual refers to. I can't say where the filter might be on the external system, but it's often in the line that returns oil to the resevoir, sometimes just after the valve bank. Hope this helps.
