Anyone know what 1962 Fordson Power Major Diesel is worth. I'm looking at one and seller wants 6,000 for it. I think he is asking too much but don't know. Looks to be in good shape but has been sitting outside fo a couple of years. Anything specific to these tractors I should look for before buying or be cautious of? What's up with the orange wheels anyway? Any input or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I have a power major 1959 they only made them for about one year so your tractor can not be 1962? there were a few a mods to the tractors in there time but major things to look for is poor starting check if the engine is warm put your hand on the block this will show if it has been run before you arrived check the rad cap as they are prone to leak water into the oil or oil into the water if the cap looks or feels ask to fill the rad to the top and run the engine at half speed for a few seconds if the water rises up and out fast, also take out the dip stick if the oil is too high or the dip stick has white cream or gone rusty walk away. price in the UK for a good tractor ready to drve can be any thing from £700 to £2000 depnding on condistion.

I cant comment on the price but seems steep unless its a mint tractor. It will not be a 1962. Power Majors were built up till late 1960. The orange wheels are standard for UK tractors.

If you are buying a Power Major make sure you get one with live drive and make sure the 2 stage clutch works ok. Paised PTO is also a very desirable option, more so than power steering. It alows opperation of the hydraulics independent of the PTO, good for mowing. These tractors are ALWAYS easy to start. If it needs ether, walk away unless its cheap. Engine kits are inexpensive but be aware that injector pumps can cost on any engine.

Parts are easy to get in the UK and Australia. Dont know about the US and Canada but its a small world with the web. Two satge clutches can be rebuilt, I just did a super major. The plates and pins can be had from Case New Holland but if the cover is broke, cracked or us then its a big issue.

The Power Major is rated at 52hp.

The Fordson major is a English built tractor. They had a good reputation for power and fuel efficiency. As I understand the older ones ran 700 rpms on the Pto shaft. The later were 540, but I do not know when the change occured. A few years ago I looked into a Major for a second tractor. The local Ford dealer, who I respect, said parts were hard to get and advised against the purchase. As for price, $6000 sounds very high. By the way, I live in the USA. Majors were very popular in England. I'm sure some of our English friends can be more informative than I can. Good Luck.

I bought a '57 Major last year and I paid $4000 Canadian and it came with a brand new landscaping blade (~$900). $6000 American is way to high unless the thing is nearly museum quality. Most diesel tractors of similar vintage in my area sell for around the $3000 to $4000 Canadian range. I think book values have to be taken with a grain of salt as well, they often seem out of whack with real word resale values. Hey insult the guy, offer him $3500, what have you got to lose?

Matt. I agree that $6,000 does sound extreme. The price they seem to be worth in Australia is between $2,500 and $4,000. For me parts such as filters, radiator hoses, gaskets, bearings and seals have never been a problem. There are a lot of them around and you'll find what you want if you look hard enough. They are super reliable in any weather and I use the battery from my 4 cyl ute (pickup) to start it. In the 8 years i've owned my Power Major I have not had one serious problem! As Jeff says, offer him $3,500 and if he says no I'd walk away. They are no collectors item, just a reliable, hard working little tractor. I wouldn't part with mine for the world
