The Dextas are really susceptible to seizing because of incorrect skirt clearance. The I&T manual specs the skirt clearance at .0045" to .0065". Skirt clearance should ALWAYS be checked!

Did you have the sleeves bored after being fitted? Honing doesnt quite do it. The sleeves are a tolerance fit & distort during fitting. Boring is the best way to ensure your new sleeves aren't truncated. Dont feel too bad, your not the first to fall victim to this.

Did you use Perkins sleeves Burr ? I am informed that the Ford sleeves are a tighter fit & as such distort rather more when fitted. That's also why some MF135 sleeves slip & why Dextas & Super Dextas don't. I was also going to say in My last post that honing can be successsful if done by some of the older more experienced & patient guys.

I buy all my engine parts at Perkins. The quality is consistant and the price is about 1/2 what Ford gets. And besides that Perkins in Houston usually has the parts on stock.

Sometimes I throw them a curve but usually they have it, or will have it in stock at 8am tomorrow everyday except Sunday- that's when they're closed.

I have tried TISCO before but sometimes their kits are missing critical items.

lol about when ye mentioned the *older more experienced & patient guys* ;^)

I learned a bunch about sizing the sleeves the hard way. It only takes one foul-up in hay baling season to make a feller remember to be more attentive to the fit.

Burrhead,

If you see my post above you'll see I am soon to be undertaking a rebuild of a Super Dexta. The whole prospect of the job worries me but i'm willing to give it a try. Do you have any suggestions or tips on where to start etc. I have a manual so will probably follow that. I have a hone that mounts into a hand held drill, will this do for honing out the liners!!!

I use a 6" ball & spring type hone to fit the block to sleeve, and then to do the inner cylinder bore both. It just takes time and plenty of patience.

If I'm in a hurry or have a bunch of stuff going on I have mine done in town at the machine shop. They only charge me like $50 to $60 to set the sleeves and hot bath the block.

When you tear into your SD if the sleeves are'nt cracked or worn egg shaped a set of rings will do, plus have the head worked.

The things to watch for even on a good looking cylinder is a hair line cracked sleeve, and/or cracked piston skirts. On the crankshaft be sure to check for rough spots and wear groove.

I can't think of anything special about your engine to warn you of except the cracked sleeve and cracked piston skirts. It is a very simple engine to work on.

One other thing I would recommend is to have the fuel injector pump and fuel injectors cleaned and re-calibrated.

If you did'nt get the hone work right for the new sleeve it seizes the piston when it gets warm, then as soon as it cools down it runs okay til the heat seizes it again.
