The No's you give do not mean much. The E1A part of the number means that it is one of the '51 to '64 Majors and was built in Dagenham and the rest of the number is the part no relating to the part it is cast onto. There is a plate behind the battery on the firewall that should have the date it left the factory. The serial no will tell you the date it was built and is also the engine number. They have a 7 digit no eg.1583906 or later they had a no. that looks something like: 08B741001A. What you are looking for is either on the flange of the flywheel housing near the starter motor or (most likely yours) on a pad at the front right hand side of the block. Find those and we'll tell you easily the exact date of manufacture.
I hope this helps..

Thank you for the supplied information, having searched my tractor the plate on the fire wall seems to be missing there is one plate but it only states that the tractor was built in the UK under licence but the number stamped on the block is as follows 1589204. Am I correct in thinking the engine number and the serial number are the same ? Any information supplied will be gratefuly recieved.

Guy, serial # is same as engine #, your engine/ser # dates to march 1961.
Sandy.

Sandy, It sounds like I am in the sitiuation as Guy, I just bought a Fordson super major with the following numbers stamped above the #1 injector 1614977, should I assume that this is the serial number of the tractor or should keep looking, I have already checked the fire wall for the data tag with no luck.

Charles, According to my book, your tractor is an August 1961 model. I hope I didn't butt in :# I hope this helps. Maybe Australian delivered Majors were the only ones with the tag on the firewall, it would be interesting to know?
Cheers for Easter!!!

Scooter,

Thanks for the information, that should help. Can you tell me for sure if this is a Super Major, all the info that I've received so far sugests that the S/N should start with a 08A for a "61" Super Major.

Happy Easter!!

Charles, scooter is correct dating to around august 1961....O8A # came in late on 1961..I have had a few majors (uk) none have serial# on firewall..they have all been from 1959 on,but perhaps earlier ones 1956ish and before had the serial # there,i know they did in 1952 anyway!!
Sandy.

The 1958 that I have has the tag on the firewall with a number on the tag that matches the one on the engine block. The 2 1959's and the 1961 just have the tag without the engine number. Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that my 1961 starts with 08A, on the block, above the injection pump below the number one injector to the front.
