bent push rods after new crank

help.....
I put a new crank in my 54 FMD and while test cranking before trying to start it, I noticed the #2,3 and 5th push rods had bent. How do I adjust the valves to push rod clearances.

I was surfing this evening and stumbled on your post on this site.

Don't know your situation but I am confused. You put in a new crank and "now" have bent pushrods? Or you are redoing an engine and after the crank installation, you were checking things out and discovered "oops we have to fix these pushrods too"?

1. Push rods can be straightened out by hand. I don't know a Fordson but have blue tractors and have had lots of F vehicles. So, I assume their valve train is similar to most internal combustion engines. You really should get a manual but basically these engines run about .016 on intakes and .018 on exhaust.

This measurement is made on TDC of each cylinder when both valves are relaxed. Put a piece of wire in the sparkplug hole and feel the piston come to the top. There are 2 top positons for the valves. One is where the valves are moving (end of power stroke and start of intake stroke) and the other (end of intake stroke and start of power stroke) is where they are relaxed. This is where you insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and valve stem. One end of the rocker arm will have an adjustment screw and locking nut.

The crank has nothing to do with your bent pushrods; camshaft lobe height, but not crank. HOWEVER if you screwed up your camshaft to crank timing in doing the replacement, you could be pushing a valve into a piston and that will bend them. Engines have alignment marks on the gears for the purpose of getting this alignment right. Usually there are punch marks and they are against one another (one on cam gear, other on crank gear).

Its my first time into an engine this deep, so....It was just a crank/bearing job. I didn't touch the cam. This must have been prior damage from something. Maybe stuck valves?? I don't know, I was just wondering if someone had any ideas.

Yes, I was just checking things out on top. Backed off the rocker arm adjustments. Now I'll set them as you you describe above. I put new(used) pushrods in and now it runs good, so the timing is ok.

The information you were given is wrong. Super Major tappet setting is .012" exhaust with rotator caps and .015" inlet.

I HAVE JUST REPLACED PISTON AND VALES ON A POWER MAJOR ENGINE AND SEE THAT THE CLEARENCES AR 0.12 AND 0.15" IS THERE A SEQUINCE OR DO YOU USE THE RULE OF 9 THANKS ANDY
