Fordson Power Major engine number problem

Hello,

I have a Fordson Power Major Diesel I'm trying to identify. The engine number stamped into the boss on the right upper side of the engine block near injector #1 is: S757531. This number does not match any in the series for 1958-1961 serial numbers. Does any one know what this number means, and what year it might be? Is there another identifying serial number located elsewhere on the tractor?

Thanks, Tony

The engine has been replaced by a industrial unit or the engine is from a combine harvester. There are date codes on the casting. There is one near the generator. Post that and I can date it for you.

Other than the replacement motor, if it is a Power Major it should have drum brakes, the motor speed control lever should be by the steering wheel and not under the tank, the seat will have four bolts holding it down, the lift control should be a simple lever going sideways, not foward. The Power Major was similar to the early "new" Major, the Super has more differences but is pretty much the same tractor.

Yes, it definately is a Power Major, I'll get the casting number from the block location you guys mentioned and post it. I was just wondering if there was another identification serial number somewhere else on the tractor that would reveal the year of manufacture. It has live hydraulics, live PTO, power steering assist.

The tractor was given to me by my neighbor, and runs, but has a slight rod knock. My intention is to rebuild and paint it, so any identification would help me locate parts.

Thanks!

Tony

The number you are looking for will have a letter prefix, number then leter suffix such a A1H or A12H. It will be just above the generator. Also look on the axle and trans for similar numbers so we can date the rest of the tractor.

Thanks,

I looked on the engine block above the generator as you suggested, but there are no numbers whatsoever casted into the block anywhere near that spot. There is only one arrowhead-shaped casting with no numbers. I did find a casting number on the right side of the block, just below the injection pump and in the center. It is: E1ADDN6015. The injection pump is a Simms SPE4A75S 527.

Also, any suggestions where to look for numbers on the transmission or axle? There is quite a bit of grease on it from the years, and I would have to steam clean it (which I will do) to see any numbers.

Thanks,

Tony

The number you are looking for will have what looks like screw heads that are cast into the casting on either side. The one on the engine is between the generator and the manifolds. The one on the gearbox is about inline with the clutch rod and the steering box drop arm. The E1ADDN or E1ADKN numbers are all part numbers.

I will give you an example, M12C would be October 12 1959.

The numbers are there.

Cheers

Steve

Thanks, Steven,

I got the numbers you asked for. The casting number on the block is l2E0, which might also be I2E0. It was in the center of the block about an inch above the oil pan between the generator and the manifold. The only other casting of any type on the generator side is a "FoMoCo" logo farther up on the block. There are no other casting numbers on the generator side of the block.

The gearbox number is J24B, placed just above a large "F" casting on the clutch-pedal side of the tractor where you said it would be.

I hope this will help solve my identification problem.

Thanks a bunch,

Tony

Gearbox indicates July 24 1958. The Power Major intro was August 1958 so I would asy your tractor is a August September build. My Super Major has a few months from casting to build date.

The number you gave me for the block is not the date code, however, if it has "FoMoCo" then it was built after July 1963. Up until then the logo used was "EnFo". If the throttle linkage is connected to the injector pump and it has the letters "FL" cast on the cylinder head near number one injector then the engine is a New Performance Super Major engine. If there is a butterfly type throttle on the intake manifold then you have had a replacment block.
