I have found out that I am not quite the man I once used to be - that is at least when it comes to hand cranking my Fordson trying to get it started - I am wondering if there is any way of using a junk yard starter without defacing the old tractor - any ideas will be appreciated -

Jim,
Tried it, spent a lot of money, looks great but, dosen't work. I had an extra pulley assembly laying around along with a killer 2hp starter motor from a Mercedes 240D. The starter turned the oposite direction so, I had it rebuilt and modified to turn in the proper direction. Next I paid a visit to my good buddy the machinest. He cut off the pully at the flange and adapted the started directly to the remainder of the assembly. This was to be temporary to see if the 2 hp starter had the enough torque to spin the engine at a 1 to 1 ratio. You had to see this thing. I looked factory and fit like a glove. The machinest even had plans for the starter to disengage after the moter started. He even said he would machine out the pulley to fit over the starter. This thing would be invisible as well. No need to remove the right rear wheel either. An added plus was my 23F engine was as loose as a goose. Hooked the contraption to a new 12V battery and nothing. I even tried depressing the clutch to get up to full torque on the starter and slowly release the clutch, nothing. Put the whole thing away for now and replace the foot rest. I've seen some contraptions that run to the rear of the tractor with something more meaningfull that the 1 to 1 ratio. They seem to work but, look terrible. Someday I'm certain I'll get back to this project. Got busy restoring other tractors and don't have the time right now. Good luck and keep us informed on your progress. RON

Ron - Ty for your input regarding makeshift starter for Fordson F, How about a pulley reduction right into the hand crank connector powered by a electric motor and V belt - the elect motor and V belt could easily be removed once the engine started, however the ugly pulley
would still remain unless your brave enough to pull a cotter pin and stud once engine was running. - Jim

That's a sobering thought. My goal was to hide the starter unit. I did turn a few heads with one of my Fordsons at a show when I started it 21 times in a row without cranking. An old timer with life long experience with a model T taught me the trick. You need to have a battery of course. My was hidden in the tool box. Haven't been able to duplicate the 21 again but have come close. Ron
