I have just acquired a Super Major and cant get the starter to crank over. When I connect the battery and actuate the starting lever(via a rod connected to the starter) a solenoid near the battery clicks in but then nothing. Main cable from the solenoid is conencted to the starter OK. I'm not familair with the starting system so dont know if I'm not doing it right or if something is broken. Any thoughts ?

Try pressing the starter lever and then manually pressing the solenoid to activate the starter . Solenoid has a rubber cover and sits between the tank and the battery

it sounds to me that the starter has gone bad, don't know where to get one exactly like yours.i had one go bad on my'61 fordson s/m,and found a starter from a ford 4000 will work fine.you just have to wire a starter button to it,and disregard the starter lever, good luck,cw

Try new cables first, if you haven't already.Check the connection at the starter from the solenoid.Your motor spins ok with the lever on the front of the valve cover up?A good 90+ plus cranks amp battery helps too.I get by with less. You can also put two batterys in series if you like.I use a block heater on my 61 in the winter. You can get the starter easily enough, but at $250+. I have an extra that I tore apart and all it needed was the brushes, I think it was $40.

I meant to say two 6 VDC batteries in series or two 12 VDC batteries in parallel.
