I am looking at this tractor right now and need to know some type of history on the plusses and minuses. It appears to be in good shape. To start it he sprayed wd40 in the intake and it fired right off and sounded strong. I asked about warming up the glow plug first and he said it doesn't have one. Is this true and if so does this type of starting sound normal?? Also he didn't know how to make the hydraulics operate for the three point hitch. Moving the lever up and down doesn't make the tractor respond at all. I feel there is some lever or something that needs to be turned to make it work. Is there? Also are these good quality tractors? I see they have been around quite some time. We are looking to do bush hogging, discing and seeding. Mainly for our hunt camp, food plots, fire lanes and trails. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It should not be necessary to use WD-40 or any other starting fluid if the compression, starter, batteries, injectors, and injector pump are in good condition. There are no glow plugs. Starting fluids can cause severe engine damage as they are not controlled by the injector pump and may ignite way too early in the compression stroke. The hitch operates from a pump in the bottom of the rear transmission, driven from the PTO shaft, and using the transmission oil. Water in the oil can be very damaging.

If your speaking of the Super Major Ford called the Ford 5000 I have one it has the simms Minmec fuel inj pump.I am in the process of replacing all engine seals and gaskets. When we used it the tractor amazed me at the power it has.I had trouble with the lift one time cause was the lift piston went back to far.Not hard to fix at all.Mine has a lever under the seat for other hydraulics to be attached. All I can say is a power house when running correct.Good Luck Glen

I think the HP is about 47 @ the PTO. I have never owned a major, but would love to have one. IMHO they are the Ford version of the IHC M and JD A; basic, reliable, and forever. I think they are even more durable than the Dexta, and I love my little Super Dexta.

Do Super Majors have a built in selector valve to switch from 3ph to remote hydraulics?

Thanks for all the info. Any idea what horsepower the Super Majors are? We are checking it out tonite. Apparently water did run down the gear shifter and the gear box fluid is milky. He has put a rubber boot on it now. Would this keep the Hyd. for the 3 point hitch from working? Also he is asking $3500 for it and it has a front end loader, is this fair? jc

I think Steven B and CW know more about these tractors than me.But I like my 4 Fordsons.Parts are a little harder to get where I am at in USA.My 1961 Super Major has always worked well for me.If you don't need the 3 point and just need the loader than you can repair the 3 point later? My needs require the use of a 3 point all the time. There are other tractors to choose from, but parts should be your primary consideration.

i have a '61 s/m,itis a very stong tractor.never heard of spraying wd-40 to crank.the engine has no glowplugs, magneto.the engine fires off of compression, which should be 14:1.to make the pto work, you have a two stage clutch, depress the clutch all the way, there should be a lever by your left leg, pull back on the lever, let the clutch out slowly the pto will engage.you press the clutch in half way to put in gear, all the way to engage, disengage pto,and hydraulics.if you need a manual, let me know,i know where you can download a manual free.any other questions will be glad to assist. cw

The early Super was a good tractor. My 61 does not have the two stage clutch. Also, if the lift doesn't raise it probably needs work. Mine is slow to raise when cold, 5 seconds or so, but works fine. Look to see if the hydraulic fluid is clean and just at the right level. Two of mine had two gallons of water from sitting out in the rain. The best thing to do is pull the head and look at the block for cracks and healthy pistons. Other than that smoke color when cold and hot.Hey cw where is the manual, I would like to have one.
