G'day fellas.
As my post on the 4 Jan 2004 my project Fordson E27N is still locked up although everything else has been great fun to work on. Everything has come apart well although I am trying not to get ahead of my self by pulling bits down that I do not yet understand fully. I had a couple of posts regards the lock-up problem and through reading and a bit of chewng the fat with old blokes, I recon' that the problem is the transmission brake is fused on. I was told that the tractor was driven and parked into its last resting place and not used again for 20 odd years, so Im thinking if the transmission brake was pulled on thyen and left, would it lock on?. How about kids playing with the gear sellect, could they lock it between gears somehow?. I have worked through all the gears while cranking the engine over slowly and it seems that each one was sellected.
Which way should I 'go-in' to the casings to check out the transmission brake and would there be a manual way of releasing it. As I mentioned in a previous post, the lever moves freely but does not seem to activate anything inside. I have the back end off the ground and can turn the wheels, but not both in the same direction at the same time. It would be nice to tow the old thing a bit closer to the shed coming on winter.
Thanks on your thoughts in advance. Greatly valued site.
Regards Dean (Central NSW Australia)

You might try engaging the PTO if fitted, and trying to drive that. just to see if there is something stuck that can be released by turning things backwards.

In neutral, the PTO should turn with the engine when engaged. It should also turn with the engine in any gear with the clutch out.

Take the spark plugs out to make hand cranking less of a chore. No sense pulling against compression if you are looking into the change box. pour some lite oil in to lube things up if it has sat so long.

Keep us posted.

Cal,
Thanks mate for the clues. Only problem is that my old bluey is without PTO. (Someone didnt want to pay the extra and so all I have is a tidy Fordson Moter Co PTO plate covering up the spot). On the otherhand, Ive cranked the moter over by hand and changed through the gears. The moment you put it in gear and let the clutch out, it jambs solid (with the back wheels off the ground). If anyone has a scanned copy of the transmission brake area within the area of the hand lever so I can see what shafts go where and how the thing engages, It would be greatly appreiciated.
Thanks, Dean

Dean I have a E27N that had been sitting in in the open for close to twenty years and was also locked up ,first thoughts were transmission brake so i removed the small cover from gearbox ajacent to the handbrake lever. From there you can clearly see the transmission brake, its slightly to the right of the main gears. It is a multiple wet disc design and in my tractor was rusted slightly, but not the cause of my problem as it was working fine when i pulled the hand brake lever, so i coated the plates with oil ,put the cover back on. My problem turned out to be frozen brake shoes another story in it's self.
