The engine is a November 1962, that would make it a Super Major(same month as my super). Thye gearbox is October 1955, thats a early Major.

Steven, what cross reference are you using to determine month of manufacture?? I have seen many web sites and have a book that gives the year for a given serial number range, but no month. Thanks, Robert

The numbers Lisa gave are the casting codes. The date of casting usualy preceedes maufacture date by one or two months.

Best scource of these codes is to get Alan T Condie's book Vintage Tractor Special No.10 "Fordson New Major E1As 1951 to 64". The book contains some errors but is a good read. You can get it on Amazon.co.uk.

Thanks steven. This may seem a silly question but is that a replacement engine as the dates are so far apart. Also where would i find the serial number and are there any other ways of dating the rest of the tractor? This is my first tractor so all advice is welcome.

The engine has been replaced. The engine number should be on a pad near number one injector. The codes you gave me are the casting codes. Those numbers will be found on the rear axle housings and the rear transmission (diff) housing as well as the hydraulic cover and cylinder head.

If the engine has a Simms Minimec type mechanical governor pump its a Super Major 54hp engine. If it has the early Simms vacum governor then its most likly a replacment cylinder block.
