Just completed engine re-build of my 64 Dexta, (With Pro Help) New Pistons,rings,B/end shells, injectors, but retained original liners, as no facility to replace. I would now like to fix very sloppy steering, I am told it is the ball race directlly under steering wheel, can anyone advise. Bearing assembly Kits in UK are over $100.00

Hi Ross, Many thanks for the reply. I am in South Lincolnshire. I have had my Super Dexta for about a year after a long search to find one at a resonable price. Apart from my interest in clasic tractors i needed it to keep my 4 acres of grass in order now we dont have any ponies. It had been running OK Last summer, but I decided with some help I would start to put it in good mechanical order. (Im not to bothered about it looking pretty), and I am now pleased I takled the engine which was in far worse condition than I imagined. Requiring new Pistons, rings, Big end shells, injectors, oil pump, full set of valves. The liners have got a good lip at the top of the stroke but have not been replaced, the job of stripping the block to take it to a press just to much work. I cannot give you much advice being on a steep learning curve myself, however now I have your email address I'll send some pictures shortly.

Regards Ross T

ross,
i just finished the steering this evening on my 1960 dexta, which i think was still the same on yours. mine was worn pretty bad, very loose, but no lower shims had ever been removed. so i bought new seals from local bearing house, cost $15 for all three. i ended up removing all lower shims, and placed one new paper gasket on the lower end. top end i had just one shim left, took it out, put new seal, and sprayed red permatex on cover to seal. even though my top bearings and race were worn some, i was able, by removing the last shim to snug it up really firm. the whole thing isnow solid and smooth. i filled up with 90wt gear oil. for now this is all i can do because i can't swing the $100 for the top race and bearing. but even so it may last quite a while as it is hardly any slack at all anymore. go to stephan's site he has pictures and parts manual to see how to overhaul the steering. anyway, that is if its the same as a 60' dexta.

hope this helps, david

Hi David, Many thanks for your rply, I have to admit that not being an expert, and not having taken the thing apart yet, it is a little difficult to follow your procedure. I hope the work can all be done from the top as I am not able at this stage to take the whole steering assembly out. I have managed to source a bearing assembly here in the UK, and I am hoping that replacing the ball bearings and races will do the job. I'll now go and try and find Stephens site for more pictorial guidance. Thanks again.
