I have a 57 fmd that will start easily but when you raise the engine speed it will start to miss badly. Injectors check good. The injector pump was checked and is good. The head was rebuilt with all new valves. The pistons were reringed and it has about 350 lbs compression. The motor has only been run for about an hour since the rings were installed. I did check for ring land and it was removed so as to not break the rings. I have had it at the ford dealer for a couple of months and they are at a stand still as what the prob is. Does any one have any ideas? Thanks

Thanks for even more ideas! I brought the tractor home today. It runs different than it used to befor I took it to the dealer. Now it starts good, idles like a new engine but when the throttle gets to about a third open it starts to make a smoke cloud which is unburnt fuel. The more throttle it gets the more white vapor it passes. It smells like fuel and not coolant.I am going out tomorrow to check on the ideas you all have sent me and see what develops. Thanks Bill

What about the vacuum lines from the intake manifold and its control at the manifold?

My 1961 SMD had these same symptoms when I first tried to use it. I was the lift pump. I installed pitcocks on the fuel filter on the top to bleed air out and make sure the new lift pump works. My recently acquired 1958 Major had been run by the previous owner with faulty injection pump timing, top dead center, and it blew the head gasket and ruined a couple of valves, etc. Just be careful on changing the pump timing. The 1958 also did not have timing marks on the flywheel like the other 3 Majors that I have. Goodluck.

I have seen injectors which tested fine on the stand still stick when you put them back in. On the bench they are cold and not injecting against pressure? Have you tried loosening individual injector lines when it is acting up?
John

Thanks for the replys. The head was rebuilt by a very good engine rebuild shop. The entire fuel system checks out good too. The diaphram was replaced by the shop that rebuilt the pump. This is what make this so frustrating. Everything checks out ok! I am going to bring the tractor back home next week and check the timing gears to see if all the timing marks line up. I dont know if the cam timing could cause this or not. If you have any more ideas let me know and I will check them out. I have had this tractor for a year now and have never been able to use it yet!! Bill

Lift pump? Plugged line or filter? Do they have a way to check the vacuum governor?

Had same prob with my super major turnd out to be wrong head gasket ( Too thick ) The reason I say this Providing you checked all the easy stuff like fuel delivery timing etc. is that you say your compresion was around 350 psi. The book says it should be 365 psi but fails to say if thats minimum or what. I have to think thats at the lower end of the scale. Just my 2 cents worth of personal experiance?
