I was wondering what part of Australia you come from. I have visited Perth and the countryside around several times still a lot diesel majors working in WA. Which do you think is the better tractor the diesel major 1952-64 or the ford 5000 1964-75.

I live at the foot of the Macedon Ranges, about 35mile from Melbourne, Victoria.

Regarding the tractors I will answer in two parts.

My favorite tractors are the E1A Majors. My all time favorite tractor is any post May 62 Super Major with the minimec pump, Live drive and raised pto. Thats because it is still usefull in todays world. Supers also have better remotes, diff lock and draft/position control. My Super Major has just retired after a full restoration.

The best tractor, IMHO,is the 6y Ford 5000. The 5000 has the advantage of indipendant PTO and hydraulics. I have a 75 5000 with dual power, load monitor, two speed pto and power steering. I also like the SOS tranmissions but as parts are getting hard to find I think they are best left for collectors as opposed to working.

Thanks for the reply to my posting. I agree with you the Ford 6y 5000 is a better tractor than the major but the engine on a diesel major seems easier to work on wet sleeves and easier to change the diesel injection pump but the 5000 has much better brakes pto system front axle .I own a 75 model 5000 myself but it needs a lot of work doing to it done over 10'000 hours plus fitted with a front end loader.
