Columbus, OH Ford(son) Diesel Mechanic Wanted

I was just wanting to know if anybody has a good diesel mechanic that they would recommend in the Columbus / Mansfield Ohio area. I have a 1959 Fordson Power Major that needs some work done. I have been unable to find anybody in the area who is willing to call me back or has time to work on this tractor. If you have a good mechanic please have them email me or if possible please email me there phone number. My email address is sloeffle|at|loefflerfurniture.com. I am willing to pay to for any drive time to my house or will pay to have it dropped off at there shop.

Sorry for the long reply, I am not too sure what is wrong with it at this time. I am working with a mechanic buddy on it at this time and he thinks that the injector lines have vapor lock or the engine has lost compression. The tractor blows black smoke when you got to start it but it just will not turn over. I poured some diesel along with oil down the air breather and you could hear it try to start but it wouldn't. It also seems to blows smoke through the head when you start it also, so there is a belief that the head gasket might be on wrong or it is cracked. I bought a farm and the tractor was owned by a older ladys husband whom has since passed away and he used it for years on the farm. As the story goes from the "resident diesel mechanic" that she had on the farm the tractor was parked under a leaky part of the roof and the engine filled full of water. I personally don't beleive the story because there is a hole at the bottom of the exhaust manifold. But to make a long story short when I got too it the wiring was burned out, the started solenoid was arcing. It is a 12V system and the "resident diesel mechanic" had the battery on backwards. He also ripped the head off and "floated number one piston to the top" because the motor was supposedly locked up. So needless to say we are cleaning up after his work. We checked the timing on the crankshaft and it looks good, and we also got the pump into time with the flywheel. The fuel injection pump has been rebuilt and is getting diesel to the injectors.

Try a LITTLE ether just to determine if there is compression , then at least you know where you stand . if it bursts into life , the knocking is just the ether so only give it a tiny sniff! then it must be a fuel problem . check a good flow out of the bleed screw on the side of the pump then if injectors are showing some fuel ,timing hardly ever goes out unless the engine is worked on. these tractors are tough and can handle a lot of abuse

We have tried ether and she still will not fire. The engine "seems" to have good compression and is getting fuel in to the injectors but won't fire. I drained the oil a few days ago and there was a cup full of water and the oil looked really chocolatey instead of the normal diesel black. The tractor is approx 46 years old so I think she is due for a re-build anyways. That is the route that I am leaning to most at this time.

Sounds like it's time for a compression check and a leakdown test.
