I have a fordson Power major. It has no Power assist steering which I intend to rectify.Cost is my biggest problem. Anyone have a cheap set up/conversion. Also in one of the forums it was mentioned about a 2 stage clutch on a FPM. Is this standard or what year were they fitted ? If this is correct can a standard clutch be converted.

Have any of you guys seen a Major with a 6 cylinder in it? Just saw one at a pull and I never saw one even when I worked on them 20 years ago.

The dual clutch independent PTO setup is a LOT different from the standard setup. Everything in the clutch is different and a great deal of the transmission is also. The high and low positions of the front shifter are even reversed. The only practical conversion would be to have the complete system from another tractor.

I have seen some power steering systems on the net but do not recall the vendors. I think the one in Turkey called something like "Safir" was one. Original systems seem scarce. I have been needing parts to repair mine for a long while.

Hope this helps, Don

I'm a little confused about assigning the name Power Major to tractors from the 60s. I'm new to this, and only bought my Super Major last week, but it had been my impression that the Super Major superceded the Power Major in 60 or 61.

My Super Major has power steering with a hydraulic piston fitted on the left front side of the tractor. The hydraulic pump seems to be a retrofit because the bracket has never been painted and is welded to the frame. It is my guess that this was a one-off installation by the former owner, whom I don't know since I bought the tractor through a local dealer. It works well, however, and I would be agreeable to a photo of it if anyone wants to see what it looks like.

The standard power assist is fitted similar to your super major.I have been able to locate a standard power assist oil pump which bolts directly to some tapped holes on the side of the engine. As for the cylinder no luck at all. It sounds like anyone with the standard cylinders are looking for overhaul kits. Unable to find a supplier in Australia for power assist.

www.epm.com Use this company for power assist cylinder seals. A friend of mine just resealed his. He also had them make seals for his loader cylinders. This company seems like they are worth their weight in gold. Dave
