I bought 2 weeks ago a Fordson Super Major with a front end loader. The tractor starts easy and is a good runner, but, there is a rough noise coming from the transmission when the PTO is engaged. Where could this come from: PTO, hydraulic pump, stuck valve???
How to check this? Could someone help me to find the solution?

I forgot to say that the first thing I did was to check oil level in the gear box and transmission.
The gear box was almost empty, and the transmission was full with a sort of milky and greasy stuff. I change it and refill with trans fluid meeting the Ford specifications ( from NH dealer). No change at all: the noise is still the same, mainly when the FEL (or lift) arrives on the top. It suggest to me a stuck valve somewhere, but where and how to reach it??

did you clean out the strainer on the bottom of the hydraulic system. if this is clogged it can cause some nasty whistling suction noises, not to mention you've got to get all of that water mixture out of there, it can break alot of stuff.
What kind of noises are you getting?

Thank you for your response. It was a very hard noise and in the same time, the engine was loosing power...The strainer was clean, and the oil is now perfectly clean. I dismantle the safety (pressure) valve: it was stuck. I clean it correctly, and now it is working perfectly. I think I will need a new one...
Thanks again.
