Cub 782 will only run with full choke

I've got a Cub Cadet 782 with a Kohler KT17 engine. Recently while using it to move snow the engine began to run rough and finally it would only run with the choke full on. Applying a load in this condition causes it to stall, but it usually restarts OK when the choke is back on. It does this at all throttle settings. This weekend I will replace the plugs, air filter, and fuel filter. Anything else, like the carb to look for? Thanks.

All you need to do is remove the carb and clean the main jet. it is probably clogged with dirt or possibly varnish from old gasoline over time. If the carb is clean, it will run just fine. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks to Chris and mb for suggestions, I used both! I cleaned out the fuel pump, and did a quick rebuild on the carb. The fuel itself looked good, no water, but a little bit of sediment, so I installed a fuel filter too. It now seems to run pretty well without the choke. For good measure I also replaced the plugs and air filter.

Snowblowing is almost fun now!

Sounds like your carb is out of adjustment. check to see if high adjustment screw backed out. Your float might be sticking or have some water in the fuel.If it runs fine with the choke out then it's starving for fuel

I have had the same sort of problem with our Cub Cadet 1440. It usually goes like that when mowing on the side of a hill. I realize that your 782 is a bit older than my 1440, and mine has a Brigs&Stratten in it, but, I found that dirt had entered into the "fuel pump" causing it to cut out and only run with full choke. Once I got it cleaned out it seemed to run much better. I cannot remember if 782's had such a device, or if it is a feature only found on more recent engines. I know that our 382 Cub did not have this. Sorry to be so inconclusive... It is just a thought. Best of luck to you.
