I have an older G14 Bolens 14 hp tractor, with a Techumseh engine. It had been running fine until the other day when i was plowing snow, the engine suddenly speeded up, by itself. I shut it down quickly (with a loud backfire) . When I went to restart it, it sounds like it wants to start but something sounds like is hammerin inside.
I took out the plug, and when I crank the engine by hand it feels like the the piston is hittin somthing at the top of the stroke. I was thinkin about tearing the engine apart and attempting to rebuild it (I've rebuilt a ford 9N tractor about 20 yrs ago) but was wondering if it is worthwhile. I only paid 250 for the tractor. Does any one have any idea on what it will cost to rebuild it. Is it cheaper to get a shortblock? Anyone know of any websites to find info on rebuilding it.

Thanks for the help. RG

If you get into buying a new engine give Honda a good look at. From 1 to 24 hp is available, equal to lower cost for a complete assemblly than a Techumse or Briggs. And sweet....you haven't had any fun until you start work with a Honda powered Wheel Horse!

I lucked out! I was telling a guy about my troubles as the engine info tag was missing on my tractor and trying to determine what size/model engine is was appeared impossible. This farmer (farmers a great guys!) said he had an engine in his barn that might be helpful, and I could have it if I could use it. A brand new Kohler 310 that had been in "lost storage" for the past 15 years. It was rusted up, but a little WD-40 and some time has left me with a working motor! I still want to put a Honda on the tractor, so guess I will need to buy me another CC.

Tecumseh has improved the throttle plate screws. They are now torx head and have a thread locker dab on the threads. Might prevent this from happening again, and a good upgrade for any Tecumseh engine.

I had a Techumseh do that twice, (swallow the throttle shaft screws), the Bolens is a pretty fine machine but the engines are junk. You'll have to tear the engine down completely to determine how much damage and cost of repair. Look at Northern Hydraulics to compare cost of new engine. Parts for Techumsehs can be very expensive. $60.00 for an exhaust valve. I would begrudge them 60 bucks for their whole plant. You might try Tulsa Engine Warehouse, many links from there.

Thanks, that was it. Looks like I "sucked" a screw out of the carb throttle plate. This is an overhead valve engine. Does anyone know if there are any "tricks" to taking the head off, and putting it back on?

Ron:. Run some searhes on the internet for parts. Ya might also go to Yahoo and search their list of "Yahoo Clubs" for groups that can help. There are clubs for the various brands: John Deere, Wheelhourse..etc good luck..harvey

I have seen the screw that holds the throttle plate to the throttle shaft come out..thus the engine will speed up by itself, and if the screw is stuck in the top of the piston it will hit the head..thus your hammering sound. If its easy pull the head..if not pull the carb.
