To Aaron-- from David A. Sohn
Saint Louis Missouri david.a.sohn@juno.com

Have you tested the ignition system-- using a good "0-Shaped" ignition test device? Connect it between the high tension wire and the spark plug. Confirm whether continuous, bright blue spark is jumping in the tester while the engine is spinning to start (or even if it is running). This will confirm whether or not an erratic ignition spark is part of your problem.

Unless you have already done so, you will probably need to install new points and condenser-- including the correct method of cleaning the new points following correct air- gap adjustment-- so they will work correctly.

Have you installed a new spark plug rated for the engine?

I have a 1963 Cub Cadet original myself with 7 HP Kohler engine. I mechanically rebuilt it May- June of 1999.

I hope this helps.

Dave -- I, too, have an original 1963 Cub Cadet, Model 70 (7 hp kohler engine), but it has started to smoke. I was wondering if there is something I can add to the oil to help stop or curtail the smoking and need to add oil all the time.

Are you getting any fuel to the carb?

Aaron,
Have you checked the carberetor? They can cause your tractor to not start. If the float is stuck, then it will be flooding, or a valve may be in need of cleaning. Or it could be something totally different... I have to work on one for an old 7hp Briggs and Stratton myself....
