Need info: I have a 16hp B&S MTD (1969) tractor. The alt/starter burnt up,and made up a starter to turn over the engine. But since doing so the engine won't start anymore.I have replaced the points, spark plug , magneto, all set to the right gap(good spark), as well the engine is spinning in the right direction, and fuel to the engine is fine.A couple of repair shops told me to try the compression, and it should blow my finger off the spark plug hold,(80-90lbs).It doesn't, but I do feel pressure, even tried putting a small amount of oil into the spark plug hole and this didn't icrease the pressure.I removed the head and the valves look fine, no carbon build-up,and they are moving up and down as I turn the engine over,as well they look as if they are seating good.Could it be that the starter isn't turning the engine over fast enough,(has easy spin feature),as well tried to rotate the engine over by hand (opposite direction) to see if there was compression change and there wasn't??? Does anyone have an idea what's going on, before I tear the engine apart? thanks for any help!

Steve , put a compression test gauge and see what it says , you may have problems with your compression release staying on .
