Briggs I/C engines

Are the Briggs I/C engines worth the extra money? I have a Gilson that used to have a I/C 11HP. I put an old regular model on it, but I need a new engine, (I flooded it one time and the crankcase filled up with gas-it runs and still has power but skips a lot at low RPM). I need to know if I/Cs are worth the extra $$$.

P.S. the old engine lasted (I think) about 13-14 years before it got to knocking so bad it seemed like it was about to throw a rod.

Are you sure the plug and ignition are in good shape. I don't think you need a new motor, but you just need to tune up the one you have....

I am sure that the gas in the crankcase is the problem. The crankcase was totally full of gas. (It was the carbs fault-mainly). Also, it knocks some.

I say yes, if your Gilson is something you plan to use for a number of years yet. The I/C engines have cast iron cylinder liners and roller bearing mains, along with harder valves and seats. Larger engines also may have a syncro balance system to reduce vibrations. This saves wear and tear on the equipment it is mounted to. It is a much improved engine over the standard aluminum block.

Thanks! I guess I will be using it for a while. (I'm 13 and a JD is too expensive for now!!!) My Gilson is in pretty good shape--I need to rewire it (it is'nt charging) and get some parts for the steering. I need to rewire it so that it bypasses the "little white box" that controls the annoying safty switches.

How badly is your engine burning oil. If it's not to bad you could possibly rebuild it by boring it over and putting a larger engine in it. This way you wouldn't neccesarilly have to replace your engine. I have had good success with the old 11 hp Briggs with aluminum blocks after being rebuilt. Maybe this could help you a little.
