Just put a new battery in my tractor. Turn ignition on and it clicks once. Try this 3 to 4 times, on and off and then it starts. Is it the starter or solenoid? Can I check each somehow to determine where the problem is? The tractor is a 14hp machine, B&S I/C engine and is 15 years old.
Thanks in advance.

Try putting a heavy piece of wire #10awg or larger across the large
terminals of the solenoid.you want to do this firmly and quickly if she cranks it's the
solenoid thats bad. don't hold it there to long
it might get hot real quick if the starter is bad.

ok, it still will not start up. How big a job is replacing a starter? A local dealer tells me it cost about $125 plus labor. Is it something a person who changes oil/plugs can do or what. Can I get a used one to work? Thanks

I'm not familiar with Bolens but most starters
are only a few bolts and a wire or two I'm
absolutely positive you can do this job yourself
probably in about 45min.at most.

If it's anything like a Briggs or Tecumseh, no problem! I wouldn't pay anyone $125 do to my starter! My dad and I can do about anything with a engine. You can do it! I'm 13 and learned a lot from my dad and grandpa. God Bless!
