Garden Tractor advise

Hello, my Mother-in-law has called upon me for advise concerning a tractor. She has purchased a large piece of property in Northern California. She needs a garden tractor / riding lawn mower.

The property is 126 acres but she is only concerned with mowing about 2 to 3 acres directly around her house.

Her main application will be keeping the weeds and grass around her property cut down to prevent fire hazard.

I told her that I did not know a great deal about tractors ( huge understatement ) but would try and find someone who did. Well, I am asking the experts. What machine should my Mother-in-law buy for her needs?

She wants to keep it under 2k, wants reliability first, function second, features third.

Any help or advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance for your kindness and good cheer.

Rich

Look for a used Gravely. They made riders and walk behind units. A sulky can be added to the walk behind units if one does not want to walk the 3 acres. (it is good excercise)

In the walk behind tractors the C12 would be a good choice. I am not that familiar with the riders but do know that a friend of mine has an 18 hp model that is 19 years old and all he has done to it is replace the plug and minor tuneups. I would say that that is dependable. He has several acres that he mows and it is on a good hill. It has a very low center of gravity and they never worry about turning it over.

I don't believe she can reach that goal. Mowing 2-3 acres with reliability for more than accouple of years is going to require a great deal more than
the Wal Mart special. A mower with a minimum of a 50" to 60" deck that
will last her 5 - 10 years is going to cost considerable more than $2K. It's
probably more like $5K + . I suggest she talk to the local commercial folks
to see what is supported well in her area and stick with the established
brand names. In the end she will have less trouble and have a machine
with some resale value. If you are interested, e-mail me and I can suggest
some companies.
